About

Michael McCarthy is a studio potter focusing on wheel thrown, woodfired functional pottery.

Michael’s work is made for use in the everyday. With a focus on strong forms and subtle finishes, his pottery is intended to add to, not overpower one’s personal space.

In addition to his studio practice, Michael is the the ceramics instructor at the Austen Riggs Center, a residential psychiatric hospital and treatment center located in Stockbridge, MA.

Michael moved to western Massachusetts in 2000 for a three year apprenticeship with potter Mark Shapiro. He then completed artist residencies at Anderson Ranch in Colorado and Altos de Chavon in the Dominican Republic before returning to western Massachusetts to establish his own studio and build his wood burning kiln.
